What is Form 2290?

IRS Form 2290 is used to report and pay HVUT (Heavy Vehicle Use Tax) for vehicles that are used on public highways and have a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more.

Note: Form 2290 is filed even if your heavy vehicle qualifies for a tax suspension and it was used less than 5,000 miles in a year (or 7,500 for farm/agricultural vehicles).

Who Should File Form 2290?

Form 2290 is filed by any individual or corporation in whose name a taxable highway motor vehicle is registered or required to be registered under U.S. or state law. It includes:

  • Truck owners and operators
  • Fleet owners
  • Owner-operators
  • Trucking companies
  • Businesses with heavy vehicles registered in their name

When is Form 2290 Due Date for 2026?

The Form 2290 due date for the 2026-2027 tax year is August 31, 2026, for heavy vehicles first used in July 2026. Vehicles first used after July are due by the last day of the month following their First Used Month.

The deadline for Form 2290 is based on when the vehicle was first used on the highway, also known as the First Used Month (FUM).

  • For heavy highway vehicles using the tax year that begins on July 1 and ends on June 30: August 31.
  • For heavy highway vehicles that were first used in months other than July: last day of the month following the month of the vehicle's First Used Month (FUM).

Form 2290 Penalties

  • Late filing penalty: Late filing can result in a failure-to-file penalty of 5%, up to a maximum of 25% of the total tax due, per month.
  • Late payment penalty: 0.5% of the unpaid tax amount, along with interest charged at the federal short-term rate plus 3 percentage points (adjusted quarterly).
  • Vehicle registration suspension: If the form is not filed or the HVUT tax is not paid, it can delay DMV registration or renewal.
